Synthetic drug (designer drug) use is on the rise across this country. Many people assume that because these substance are in some cases legal to purchase, that there is no harm in using them. However, the effects of the drugs are unpredictable and, in many cases, deadly. Synthetic Drugs – Chemistry’s Dark Side is a video aimed at educating people on the consequences of using these dangerous drugs.
All across the country, unethical businesses and chemists are creating and distributing these dangerous substances. By making slight changes to the chemical structure of already illegal drugs, new chemical compounds are being created, marketed, and distributed. These new drugs are being sold in gas stations, head shops and over the Internet as herbal incense, glass cleaner, plant food and bath salts, masking their true purpose as mind-altering drugs.
Fake marijuana and bath salts, two examples of synthetic drugs, have led to a huge spike in poison control calls and emergency room visits. According the American Association of Poison Control Centers, over 13,000 calls were made in 2011 up from 3,200 calls in 2010. Young people are essentially making themselves guinea pigs in an undocumented synthetic drug research experiment.
